Historic Architecture in LA- Victorian Homes

Yes, Victorian homes do exist in LA, and you can even explore a few (somewhat intact) Victorian-era neighborhoods if you know where to find them. In the midst of such a large and modern city, it is easy to overlook the many small pockets of history that are scattered throughout Los Angeles, But the city is abundant with hidden gems, historic neighborhoods, and architectural vestiges of another time. In fact, Los Angeles is home to some of the finest examples of historic architecture in the country! An entire block of Victorian-era manors in the Angelino Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles is preserved on the National Register of Historic Places. Which brings me back to the topic of this post: what exactly is Victorian architecture, and where can it be found here in LA?

Victorian architecture actually refers to a number of architecture styles that emerged during the reign of Queen Victoria. The styles that we call "Victorian" evolved out of England’s gothic style architecture, in part, thanks to technological advances from the industrial revolution. Victorian homes are often tall and narrow with bright colors, and elaborate decoration and trim. Also common are towers or turrets, bay windows, and wrap-around porches.

Popular architectural styles during the Victorian era include-

  • Italianete- featuring low-pitched roofs, wide eaves with ornamental brackets, and a tall appearance.

  • Queen Anne- elaborate styles often with towers or turrets, porches and balconies, and decorative spindles.

  • Folk Victorian- simple, square or symmetrical shapes, porches, and bracketed eaves.

  • Eastlake/Stick- featuring ornamental details and decorative half-timbering, steep, gabled roofs, and rectangular shape.

Where to find these styles in Los Angeles:

Angelino Heights, West Adams– University Park, Lincoln Heights, Highland Park
